The new Managing Director of the Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra

Hello Current MYSO Members,

My name is Andrew Llewellyn and I am writing to you as the new Managing Director of the MYSO. As you may know from the 50th anniversary concert, the mission and legacy of the Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra will continue to live on under the umbrella of the Chesapeake Orchestra, a professional orchestra directed by MYSO alumnus Maestro Jeffrey Silberschlag. You can find his bio here.

I wanted to take the time to assure you that the Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra is set to begin its 51st season and as veterans of the orchestra, pleased rest assured that your spots are secure.

We are in discussion with CCBC and the rehearsals are likely to continue at Catonsville Community College. Details will be forthcoming if there are any changes.

MYSO will begin auditions on August 23rd, and September 6th will be the first day of rehearsals.

Rehearsals will continue to be on Saturdays.  At this stage it would be helpful for you to hold in your schedule 1:00pm-5:00pm time slot.  However, we expect rehearsals to be shorter, from 2:30pm-5:00pm.

Minnesota Youth Symphonies model, offers good audition guidelines and material at their website. Their audition includes a solo piece, orchestral excerpts, and scales. Please take a look at their website while we update ours with this type of information.

We would like to invite you to visit the River Concert Series, held on the grounds of St. Mary’s College of Maryland, to see a performance of the Chesapeake Orchestra, this summer!  Concerts begin on Friday, June 20 and continue through July 25.  The concerts usually attended by thousands are free and begin at 7:00pm.  Please let me know if you plan on attending and we would be happy to set up some time for you to meet Maestro Silberschlag and some of our principal players.

Among the new things that our relationship offers, will be sectional coaching from our professional players, and a side-by-side concert with the Chesapeake Orchestra.  You may be surprised to see that many of your teachers are members of the Chesapeake Orchestra.

The Hampton Inn is also offering a special rate for concert attendees.

Please respond to this email if you plan on returning for next year and with any questions you may have.

Thank you,

Andrew Llewellyn, Managing Director, MYSO
